Operational technology (OT) is the hardware and software that monitors and controls physical processes: the industrial control systems behind power grids, water treatment, pipelines, ports and factories. OT security is a discipline of its own: much of the installed base is decades old, was never designed for hostile networks, and cannot simply be patched or rebooted the way office IT can. A compromise does not corrupt a file; it opens a valve.
