China sanctioned 20 US defence companies over Taiwan sales

China did not sanction an abstract arms trade. On 26 December 2025, it announced measures against 20 US defence companies and 10 individuals over arms sales to Taiwan, Al Jazeera reported. The reported measures included asset freezes and bans on transactions with Chinese organisations and individuals.

The target was the corporate ecosystem around a sale. A company can build equipment for Taiwan under US authority and still need to consider business, assets and counterparties in China. Beijing’s action aimed at that exposure, not at the legal validity of the US sales themselves.

The report does not show that a particular Taiwan delivery was stopped. Nor does a sanctions announcement automatically reveal the value of each affected company’s China-linked business. The pressure lies in the possibility that a China connection becomes costly or unusable.

The timing is part of the calculation. The measure followed US support for Taiwan, but it did not give Beijing control over US export decisions. It created a separate cost for the firms expected to carry them out.
