Our custom fuze radiography cells against VisiConsult VCxray, North Star Imaging and VJ Technologies: what a purpose-built ordnance inspection line requires.
These vendors all build capable custom X-ray and CT systems, and most of them publish very little for ammunition work, which is normal for a bespoke ordnance line. The comparison is less about a spec table and more about who will engineer, deliver and support a cell that handles live fuzes inside your plant.
This is a fielded capability, not a concept. Our principal builds digital radiography cells sized to the customer's fuze families, and the oldest fielded system has inspected fuzes automatically for a decade. The systems radiograph electronic and mechanical fuzes and multiple grenade models without touching the energetic train, using a high-reliability swivel that presents the next fuze while the last is reviewed.

What the table means
Nobody sells an off-the-shelf fuze line, and the honest ones say so.
VisiConsult's X Line is explicitly a custom-build offering: solution architects size the technology to the part, the process and the budget, and the published material is about the engineering method rather than a spec table. North Star names munitions, ordnance and energetics as application areas and publishes 450 kV on the X7000LT for defense programs, but not a fuze configuration. VJ Technologies publishes up to 225 kV with automated defect recognition on its large-scale DR system, aimed at castings and aerospace. All three are credible engineering houses. None publishes a fuze cell, because a fuze cell is designed around one customer's fuze families, which is exactly how ours is built.
The comparison that matters is who has already done it, and who will own the result.
For live-energetic inspection the risk is not the imaging physics, which all four vendors have. The risk is the manipulator geometry, the safe stand-off and the automated presentation of one fuze after another without an operator in the beam. Our swivel presents the next fuze while the last is reviewed, and the oldest fielded system has run that way inspecting fuzes for a decade. That is an operating record on this specific job, not a capability claim, and it comes with the acceptance software and the support from one independent, non-aligned team rather than a chain that ends at a foreign export desk.
Questions buyers ask
Who builds custom X-ray inspection cells for artillery fuzes and grenades?
Several capable vendors build bespoke industrial X-ray systems that can be configured for ordnance: VisiConsult's VCxray X Line, North Star Imaging, and VJ Technologies among them. What separates them for fuze work is a delivered fuze line rather than a general capability. Our principal builds cells sized to the customer's fuze families, radiographing electronic and mechanical fuzes and multiple grenade models without touching the energetic train, with 160 to 450 kV mini-focus sources and 2D or CT analysis, and the oldest fielded system has inspected fuzes automatically for a decade.
Why are there so few published specs for ammunition inspection systems?
Because these are custom builds, not catalogue products. VisiConsult publishes its engineering method rather than a spec table, and North Star and VJ Technologies publish general DR and CT figures with munitions named only as an application. That is normal for ordnance work: the source energy, the manipulator geometry and the safe stand-off are designed around one customer's parts. Judge these systems by the vendor's delivered record on comparable ammunition, not by a datasheet.
What energy range do I need to radiograph a fuze, and how does yours compare?
It depends on the fuze wall thickness and internal density, which is why the source is chosen per application. Our cells use a 160 to 450 kV mini-focus series, which covers the range of electronic and mechanical fuzes and grenade bodies. North Star publishes 450 kV on its X7000LT for defense programs and VJ Technologies publishes up to 225 kV on its large-scale DR system; neither publishes a fuze-specific setting. Specify the densest fuze you must penetrate and size the source to that.
How is the cell kept safe when it is inspecting live energetics?
No responsible vendor publishes its energetic-handling procedure, and none of the competitor documents addresses it. The engineering answer is that the manipulator geometry, the safe stand-off and the automated part presentation are designed for the specific fuze so the radiograph is taken without touching the energetic train. Our swivel presents the next fuze while the last is reviewed, which keeps throughput up without an operator near the beam. This is a bespoke design task in every case, so ask each vendor for its record on comparable live-fuze work.
Is this a fielded system or a development programme?
Fielded. The systems are in service inspecting fuzes and grenades, and the oldest has run automatically for a decade. The catalogue figures quoted here, the 160 to 450 kV source series, the flat panels to 432 by 432 mm and the 100% duty cycle, are the delivered specification.
Why does supplier nationality matter for an ammunition inspection line?
Because the inspection record is data about your munitions readiness, and the support line for a live-fuze cell cannot depend on a foreign export calendar. Two of the three comparable vendors here are United States based and one is German with branches abroad; none addresses export consent, because those conditions arrive with the licence rather than the brochure. An independent, non-aligned supplier keeps the cell, its acceptance software and the inspection findings inside your jurisdiction.
