Against the European powder majors our line is small. It is also willing to develop a composition to a programme specification instead of asking the programme to redesign around a standard grade.
These are production powders feeding sintered components, coatings and additive manufacturing today, not pilot batches. The line runs on controlled atomisation with more than 25 years of powder metallurgy behind it, and the individual grades are made under an ISO 9001:2015 system.

What the table means
Breadth is not the same as fit
Höganäs publishes sintered mechanical properties for grade after grade, at stated compaction pressures and sintering temperatures. Nobody in this comparison matches that. But a national programme trying to substitute imports rarely fails because a datasheet was thin. It fails because the grade it needs sits outside a standard catalogue and the mill will not run a small campaign for it. That is the space our line works in.
Read who owns the supply chain
Makin states plainly in its own brochure that it is part of the GRINM family with a Chinese sister company holding the largest copper powder production base in China. That is a commercial fact, not an accusation, and it is exactly the kind of fact a defence ministry should notice when it maps single points of failure. Powder is the start of the chain, which is where counterfeit or untraceable material does its damage and where procurement scrutiny usually stops.
What to ask us for
Ask for the grade datasheet with apparent density, sieve analysis and oxygen limits against your part, and ask what a development campaign costs. If the answer to a specification question is a shrug, buy from Höganäs. If the answer is a trial batch, you are talking to a supplier that can follow your design rather than lead it.

What is the best alternative to Höganäs for a country trying to build sovereign powder metallurgy capacity?
Höganäs is the deepest published data set in the industry and the safest choice if your part maps onto one of its standard grades. It is a poor choice if your goal is capability transfer, because you become a buyer of a standard catalogue rather than an owner of a composition. Our line covers copper, bronze, brass, tin, nickel, iron-copper, tool steel, stainless and diamond-tool matrix powders through controlled atomisation, and develops compositions to programme specification. For an import-substitution programme that is the more useful relationship.
How do these powder suppliers compare on cost of ownership for a sintered-parts plant?
Powder price is the smaller half of the equation. Scrap rate, dimensional scatter and rework dominate, which is why Höganäs sells its Fe-Cu-C toolbox on copper distribution and reduced dimensional scatter rather than on price, and why Makin sells press-ready premixes on eliminating in-plant mixing. Our answer is upstream of both: a composition matched to your press and furnace, developed with you, rather than a standard grade you compensate for. Judge it on first-pass yield in your own plant, not on a quoted price per kilogram.
Do you publish as much technical data as the European powder majors?
No. Höganäs publishes sintered density, hardness, yield, tensile, elongation and impact energy for each grade at stated process conditions, and we publish composition, mesh, apparent density and oxygen limits. That is a documentation gap on our side, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. The data exists per batch; ask for it against a specific grade.
Why does the origin of metal powder matter for a defence programme?
Powder sits at the very start of the supply chain, before the point most procurement scrutiny reaches, and a sintered part inherits everything the powder brought with it. Two risks follow: material provenance you cannot trace, and a supplier whose government can stop a shipment. An independent source with a stated import-substitution mandate addresses both, and the material is traceable rather than assumed.
