Alternative to VGSTUDIO MAX

It depends what you are replacing. For pure CT volume analysis, VGSTUDIO MAX is excellent and worth its licence, with editions from Essential to Pro. What it does not do is acquire the image or control the motion, so it is half of an inspection cell and the half that never touches the hardware. The Imaging Suite integrates with any detector, which is what makes one review standard possible across mixed hardware. Comet Yxlon's suite is presented as coordinated with its own inspection systems and Nordson's Revalution ships with Nordson machines; neither is published as a detector-agnostic acquisition product. One caveat we should state plainly: we do not publish a list of supported detector interfaces or file formats, so ask for it against your installed hardware.

Does the software include CT reconstruction?

As an option. The suite adds a CT module with built-in automatic 3D reconstruction, so a facility can scale from real-time radiography to volumetric tomography on one software backbone rather than retraining on a second product. VGSTUDIO MAX includes CT reconstruction as core, with deep segmentation requiring accelerator hardware, and Nordson offers µCT as an option alongside X-Plane slice views.

The suite carries built-in ASTM-standard tools for validating detector performance, which is what lets an inspection result survive an audit rather than rest on an operator's word. None of VGSTUDIO MAX, the Comet Yxlon suite or Revalution publishes detector validation as a feature. If your quality system is audited annually, this is the row to check first.

Imaging software that drives manipulators for automated inspection

The suite integrates with manipulators for fully automated inspection, which matters when the same cell has to run unattended screening as well as manual analysis. Volume Graphics automates repeating analysis workflows and states compatibility with nearly every CT system, but it does not drive the motion. Comet Yxlon and Nordson both automate within their own machines.

Is the acquisition workstation supplied with the software?

Yes, the suite is supplied with a high-end acquisition workstation, so the compute is specified against the imaging load rather than left to your IT department. Volume Graphics supplies software only and states typical requirements of a 3 GHz or faster multi-core processor with 64 to 512 GB of RAM for industrial data sets. Nordson's Revalution runs on the Quadra 7 Pro under Windows 11 with a 40 inch monitor.

Can inspection software keep our data inside our own jurisdiction?

It can if the vendor has no reason to route it elsewhere. None of the three competitor sources addresses data residency; Volume Graphics lists sales and support through Hexagon entities in Germany, Japan, the United States, China and Singapore. Our suite is supplied from an independent, non-aligned source with the workstation on your premises, so the images, the defect calls and the reports stay where you put them.

Who owns the inspection standard if the software that enforces it is written by a foreign vendor?

In practice, they do. Every vendor here offers customisation of a sort: editions in VGSTUDIO MAX, wizards and presets in Geminy, stored operator layouts in Revalution. What none of them offers is changing what the software does when your acceptance criteria change. Our suite is fully customisable in workflow, defect tooling and reporting, developed by the same organisation that supplies the inspection cells, so the standard lives with the operator rather than in a foreign roadmap.

Both, and the first matters more. We want to modernise ageing X-ray cells without replacing the hardware. Is that realistic?

Usually, yes, and it is the cheaper project. The constraint is rarely the tube or the cabinet; it is a review layer that cannot produce a modern report or validate the detector. A suite that integrates with any detector, carries ASTM-standard validation tools and can drive manipulators lets an old cell keep working under a current standard. Where the motion is also worn out, a custom manipulator can be fitted into the existing vault.

Do we need CT analysis software, or is radiography review enough for most decisions?

Start with radiography and buy the path to CT. Most production decisions are made on 2D images, which is why Nordson offers X-Plane slice views without additional CT hardware. CT earns its cost on porosity volume, internal geometry and dimensional work, which is where VGSTUDIO MAX is strong. Our optional CT module with automatic 3D reconstruction sits on the same backbone, so a facility scales without retraining on a second product.

What is not published about the suite that we should ask for before a tender?

Three items. Supported operating systems and minimum workstation specification are not published, where Volume Graphics and Nordson both state theirs. The licensing model, whether perpetual, subscription, per-seat or floating, is not published. Nor is a list of supported detector interfaces and file formats behind the claim that the suite integrates with any detector. Ask for all three in writing and compare them against the competing quotes.
