India faces the sea along two long coastlines and a scatter of island territories, so continuous awareness of the approaches is a task measured in thousands of kilometres of shore. Fixed coastal radar reaches only so far, and the seams between stations, around headlands, estuaries and busy fishing grounds, are exactly where the picture thins.
