What does drone pilot training involve?

The Unmanned Systems Developer's pipeline covers ISR, attack and counter-UAS platforms and runs on aircraft that are in service, taught by the people who support those aircraft. Certification is the output, and it is sustained as platforms and doctrine change rather than delivered once at handover.

How long does it take to certify a drone operator?
We do not publish course length, module list or instructor-to-student ratio, and our own comparison page records that gap. Baykar publishes its module sequence, which runs from gimbal hardware and technical instruction through simulator work, drill video, map use and image evaluation to training flights. Use that as the disclosure standard you demand from every bidder, including us.
Can drone training be delivered in our own country?
With us, yes. The pipeline is designed to run in-region and to build sovereign operating capability rather than to concentrate skills at a factory. Baykar does not publish the location of its operator programme, and Simlat's model is customer-site systems plus browser access. Where training happens decides who owns the capability in five years, so put the location in the contract.

Does training include live flying or only simulator work?
Both, in sequence. Our pipeline takes crews from virtual-reality simulation to live flight on the developer's ISR, attack and counter-UAS platforms. Baykar's programme also ends in training flights. Simlat supplies simulation rather than live sorties, which is the right purchase for a different problem. Check which of the three you are actually buying before the budget is written.
Training programme for a national drone cadre across mixed roles
If your fleet is single-vendor, that vendor's programme is usually the efficient answer. If you are building a national cadre spanning ISR, strike and counter-drone crews, you need one pipeline that covers all three and stays in-region as doctrine changes. That is the shape of our programme: the same certification path across the platform lines, delivered where the crews serve.

How do we keep drone crews current after certification?
Currency is the recurring cost, not initial certification, and crews decay quickly without regular flying. Our answer is a repeatable in-region pipeline that keeps operators current as platforms and doctrine change; Simlat's is browser-delivered cloud sessions, scheduled or free flight. Baykar does not publish a currency model. Ask every supplier what five years of currency costs per operator.
Can a supplier train our instructors so we can run the school ourselves?
That should be a contract clause, not a hope. The usual sequence is crews first, then instructors, then a permanent school, with the supplier obliged to deliver each stage. Simlat sells the machinery a school is built on, including instructor stations and automatic scoring, which is the right purchase once you have staff. Our pipeline is built to leave operating capability in-region rather than to concentrate it at a factory.

Counter-drone operator training as well as pilot training
Counter-UAS crews are trained through our platform line rather than as a separate simulator product, because the decisions they make are made against real sensors and effectors. Simlat publishes a dedicated counter-UAS simulator covering detection, identification, decision making and effector use, which is the most specific published offer here. Baykar does not publish counter-UAS operator training. Decide whether you want simulated decision drills, live crews, or both.

Training for crews who must also build and repair their own airframes
That is a separate skill from flying and it should be scheduled as one. Assembly, repair and reconfiguration training sits alongside the flying course where a unit operates modular kits, so the same people who fly the airframe can rebuild it. Neither published competitor trains customers to manufacture or repair an aircraft; both train you to operate theirs.

We can buy the aircraft quickly but our operators are the bottleneck. How do we shorten that?
Start the training before the airframes land. Simulation lets crews reach a working standard while aircraft are in transit, and a simulator-to-live pathway then converts that into certification in fewer live hours. Treat platforms, simulator and certification as one programme with one delivery date rather than three procurements with three, which is how we structure it.

What happens to a training programme if relations with the supplier state deteriorate?
It stops with the visas, usually before anyone admits it has stopped. A training relationship lasts years and depends on people travelling, so a supplier whose home government can restrict movement can pause your pipeline without cancelling a contract. An in-region pipeline from a non-aligned supplier keeps the school open, and the aim is explicit in our case: operators who answer to your command, trained where they serve.
How should a ministry write a drone training tender so bids are comparable?
Specify the exit standard, not the course. State how many certified crews you need, by when, on which platform types, with what currency obligation for the following five years, and who certifies them. Baykar's published module list is a good template for the syllabus detail you can reasonably demand. Then require every bidder, including us, to state instructor-to-student ratio and course length in the bid.
Is it cheaper to train crews abroad or to bring the training to us?
Over one course, abroad is often cheaper. Over a decade it rarely is, because every refresher, every doctrine change and every new platform repeats the travel, and none of the capability stays behind. In-region delivery front-loads the cost and leaves you with instructors, a syllabus and crews who train where they will fight. Price both models over ten years rather than over the first contract.

Our crews fly aircraft from three different vendors. Can one training provider cover all of them?
Not automatically, and any provider claiming otherwise should be asked which airframes they will certify on. Simlat's simulation line covers third-party systems including MAVLink and Mission Planner, Lockheed Martin VCSi and Insitu ScanEagle, which is the broadest published coverage here. Our pipeline certifies crews across the developer's ISR, attack and counter-UAS platforms. For a genuinely mixed fleet, split the requirement between simulation coverage and platform certification and be explicit about both.
How do we know a certified operator is actually competent rather than merely certificated?
Set the standard as an observable outcome and test it under load. Fly a mission with degraded links, a moving target and a required abort, and score the decisions rather than the stick work. Simlat publishes automatic trainee scoring for this kind of assessment. Whichever supplier you use, hold the certification to a mission standard your own commanders wrote, not one the vendor supplied.
