Inspection is the heart of airworthiness
An MRO's authority to return an aircraft to service rests on inspection. Fatigue cracks, corrosion, disbonds and impact damage develop invisibly between checks; non-destructive testing is how they are found before they matter. Regulators accordingly treat NDT not as a workshop convenience but as a controlled, audited function with defined methods, procedures and personnel qualifications.
The methods MROs live by
Airframe and engine work draws on the full NDT canon: eddy-current for surface and near-surface cracks in metallic structure, ultrasonics for thickness and delamination checks including composite structure, radiography for internal assemblies, and fluorescent penetrant for surface-breaking defects in engine and structural parts. Fleet type and check level determine the mix.
People are certified, not just machines
Aerospace NDT is defined as much by personnel certification as by equipment. Recognised schemes qualify inspectors by method and level, with defined training hours, examinations and recertification. An MRO's NDT capability is the combination of certified people, approved procedures and calibrated equipment. Remove any one and the capability legally ceases to exist.
What MROs should demand of suppliers
Equipment for aerospace MRO must arrive with the ecosystem the audit will examine: calibration traceability, procedure support for the operator's approved methods, training aligned to recognised certification schemes, and responsive in-region service, because an inspection bay that is down does not just delay a job, it grounds revenue aircraft.

Choose a single accountable channel that keeps that system current, and where in-region support and training are in scope, arrange localisation per programme, subject to export controls and end-use approvals. Treated that way, NDT sustains both the fleet and the operator's authority to return it to service.
